Restful nature

The Weerribben is a nature reserve, located in Northwest Overijssel, near Steenwijk. It is a landscape where water and reeds predominate. Together with the neighboring nature reserve De Wieden, it forms the most important marshland in Northwest Europe.

The current landscape of the Weerribben was created by the excavation of peat for peat extraction. Traces of this can be found both in the landscape and in the name of the area. Ribs are narrow strips of land on which the extracted peat was laid out to dry and the bogs are the peathed out areas, also called wet cap holes. After the peat-cutting period, cane cultivation became a defining feature of the landscape.

The Weerribben is particularly valuable from a natural science point of view, partly because it contains different stages of natural development from open water to swamp forest.
As a result, a wide variety of environmental types can be found. We distinguish: open water, reed beds, hay meadows and swamp forests. Each environmental type has its own vegetation.
